Fans convinced Yaya Toure's 'Pep Guardiola curse' has 'entered new phase' after Man City's Premier League charges

Yaya Toure's agent once claimed an African curse was what was stopped Pep Guardiola from winning the Champions League with Manchester City.

Fans are convinced that Yaya Toure's "curse on Pep Guardiola" has entered a new phase after Manchester City were charged with "numerous" breaches of financial rules by the Premier League.

On Monday morning, as per a Premier League statement, it's alleged that City breached the rules over a period of nine seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18 and are accused of not providing the accurate financial information when it comes to club revenue, sponsorship revenue and operating costs.

The news sent social media into overdrive, with rivals fans speculating about the possible ramifications if City are found guilty.

And many joked about the events being a result of the supposed curse placed on Guardiola and City.

Toure's outspoken agent, Dimitri Seluk, once controversially claimed an African curse was thwarting Guardiola and City in the Champions League in retaliation for his treatment of the Ivorian.

"He [Guardiola] turned all Africa against himself, many African fans turned away from Manchester City," said Seluk.

"And I'm sure that many African shamans in the future will not allow Guardiola to win the Champions League.

"This will be for Guardiola an African curse. Life will show whether I am right or not."

City are still waiting for their first Champions League win, having lost in the final once and been eliminated in two semi finals - most recently in dramatic circumstances against Real Madrid last season.

Some City fans joked that Toure had lifted the curse when he wished them "good luck" at the Champions League group stage draw.

Yet plenty are now saying that Toure's spell is still being cast on his old team.

One wrote: "Yaya Toure watching the African curse on Man City enter the next phase."

Another said: "Yaya Toure's curse will haunt Pep Guardiola forever."

A third commented: "Yaya Toure getting to see his curse on Man city enter a New phase."

A fourth added: "This is the final form of Yaya Toure’s curse."

A fifth stated: "I can't believe Yaya toure is taking the Africa curse on city to the next level."

There are more than 100 alleged charges against the Premier League champions, who put out a statement of their own and "welcome" the opportunity to defend themselves in a review hosted by an independent commission.

Any outcome is not likely to come anytime soon given the Premier League's investigation lasted four years.

In 2020, City had a two-year ban from European club competitions overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), after UEFA had ruled that the Blues committed "serious breaches" of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016.

The club plan to prove that the verdict was not reached because of a technicality and clear their name.
