Tottenham Hotspur mocked for sending out World Cup semi-final invitations after England lost to France

Tottenham Hotspur mocked for sending out World Cup semi-final invitations after England lost to France

England bowed out at the quarter-final stage after losing 2-1 against France

Tottenham Hotspurs are currently the joke of the town after they sent out World Cup semi-final invitations for fans to watch England at the club’s home ground.

Gareth Southgate’s men were knocked out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage after goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud sealed a 2-1 victory.

England captain and Spurs star man Harry Kane was the scorer for the Three Lions but also missed a crucial late penalty to level things at 2-2.

To make matters worse for Kane, his club made an embarrassing blunder by sending emails to fans that read: “England are through to the semi-finals! Book a private screening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

Someone obviously forgot to cancel the automated emails and it has led to Spurs being mocked on social media.

One fan said: “Of all the scheduled emails to forget to cancel.”

Another tweeted: “Wishful thinking from the Spurs marketing team. I think someone forgot to delete this in their email queue last night…”

A third fan added: “Did anyone else just get that email from Spurs? Man alive.”

It was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise decent tournament for Southgate and England after they pushed the defending champions all the way.

The penalty miss will for sure haunt Kane for a long while, the England captain wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.”

Kane's fellow teammates also showed their support for the Spurs striker, Leicester's James Maddison said: “No one in world football I would have rather had stood over that penalty. We win together and lose together.”

After their victory over England, France will take on Morocco on Wednesday, with the winner set to face either Argentina or Croatia in next Sunday’s World Cup final.
