The disgraced Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales was allegedly attacked by a family member during the presentation of his new book in Madrid.

Rubiales resigned in September 2023 after receiving widespread condemnation for his conduct following Spain's Women's World Cup win.

During the celebrations, he grabbed captain Jenni Hermoso's head and kissed her on the lips.

The incident triggered protests across Spain, with 81 players refusing to play for the women's team until Rubiales stepped down.

Spain's acting prime minister described the event as "unacceptable", adding that it was evidence the country still had progress to make in equality and women's rights.

In February 2025, Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing Hermoso without her consent and was ordered to pay a fine of €10,800 (£8,942).

But he was acquitted of coercion for allegedly attempting to pressure Hermoso into saying publicly that the kiss was consensual.

Rubiales appealed the sexual assault conviction, but the Spanish court upheld the fine, while dismissing a separate appeal from prosecutors seeking a retrial and prison time.

The High Court also banned Rubiales from going within a 200-metre radius of Hermoso and from communicating with her for one year.

During a testimony in court, Hermoso said the incident had 'stained one of the happiest days of her life', as per the BBC.

Now, the former Spanish football federation president has released a book, 'Kill Rubiales'.

He held a launch event on Maria de Molina Street in Madrid, but it was interrupted when an individual threw three eggs at him.

A clip that has circulated on social media shows Rubiales springing up out of his chair and being held back by members of the audience.

The man who threw the eggs is reported as being Rubiales' uncle.

Rubiales told the news portal Periodista Digital: “I’ve found out he was my own uncle; Luis Ruben he’s called. An uncle who is my age.

“He threw eggs at me because he’s a deranged person, and I don’t think there’s any justification for it.

"They’ve arrested him, they’ve taken him away, and, well, we’ll have to take action against him because I honestly thought he was armed."

Police confirmed a Spanish man had been arrested, but declined to confirm the family connection, according to The Guardian.

Rubiales is currently serving a three-year ban from football imposed by FIFA.

He was suspended in October 2023, with FIFA's appeals committee upholding the suspension in January 2024, before the Court of Arbitration of Sport dismissed his appeal in February 2025.

CAS ruled that the sanction was both "reasonable and proportional."
