Wesley Fofana looked to be in tears as he went off injured, fans are worried

The Chelsea centre back had opened the scoring in the Champions League vs AC Milan but then had to go off injured, and fans are worried.

Wesley Fofana appeared to be in tears, as he went off injured in the first half of Chelsea's Champions League clash with AC Milan.

Fofana is a new signing at Stamford Bridge, having joined from Leicester City right at the end of August, after a long saga that lasted most of the transfer window.

After his £75 million move from the Foxes, fans of his new club were not too impressed by his Champions League debut, as Chelsea were on the end of a shock to Dinamo Zagreb, which was the end of Thomas Tuchel's time at the club.

On Wednesday night, Fofana started in the game against Milan, a game Graham Potter's side really needed to win, having drawn their second game of the group, against Red Bull Salzburg.

The Italians started the game the better, but the match turned on two attacking contributions from centre back Thiago Silva in a matter of seconds.

First the Brazilian's header was saved by Ciprian Tatarusanu in the Milan goal, and when Tatarusanu saved again from Silva, from the resulting corner, Fofana slotted home.

However his night turned sour just 14 minutes later, as a knee injury put a premature end to Fofana's night, and he looked extremely upset as Trevoh Chalobah replaced him.

The 21-year-old defender made a huge splash for Leicester when he first joined the club in 2020, and had an excellent first season with the club.

However, he broke his leg in a pre season friendly ahead of the 2021/22 season, after a horrendous challenge from Villarreal's Fer Nino.

He missed most of the season for Brendan Rodgers' side, only making seven appearances in the league, and fans were understandably hopeful that he wasn't being waylaid by another bad injury.

"Extremely worried about Fofana. In tears and it looks like the same knee he tore before. Really hoping it’s minor," one fan said on social media.

"Hoping Fofana's injury is not serious. His tears isn't a good sign," a second added.

Another posted a picture of a very young Fofana in a Chelsea shirt, with the caption, "A dream come true for Fofana," referring to the goal, "Really hope his injury isn’t serious and he can be back on the pitch soon."

One fan was clearly not very optimistic, adding, "That Fofana injury just sucks man. A second long term injury at 21y could change his career permanently."

"Fofana’s injury really concerns me. His knee twists as his studs are caught in the grass. Never good," another pointed out.

Aside from the injury, it was a good night for Potter's side, as they picked up the much needed three points to really kick their European campaign off, after a stuttering start.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, backed to break the Chelsea number nine curse, got his third goal for the club, after breaking his league duck last weekend against Crystal Palace, to double the lead.

Reece James added the third just after the hour mark, and the English club were able to see the game out pretty easily from there.
