Vincent Kompany's comment after Burnley got thrashed 6-0 by Man City proves he's an elite coach

Vincent Kompany showed an elite mentality in his post-match interview following his Burnley side's hammering by Manchester City.

The former City captain was humiliated on his old patch on Saturday evening as Pep Guardiola's side torpedoed the Clarets 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland running in a hat-trick.

It was a rare low point in a season of highs for Kompany since taking charge of Burnley. They might now be out of the FA Cup following this quarter-final rout, but they're set for the Premier League next season, currently 13 points clear at the top of the Championship.

And Kompany declared that his team are a Premier League side in waiting as he spoke to the media after the defeat.

Asked how to bounce back from the defeat, he said: "You've got to use the pain, it's such an important moment.

"So my first thing is no one can tell me that some of our players – maybe one or two – don't have the potential or the right to dream to play for the very best teams in the world. But now they know how much work to do, and that's such a powerful message for me

"We go back to the training ground. And we’re not 1st place in the Championship. We’re 21st place in the English football. That’s why we can’t rest."

Kompany was glowing in his praise of Guardiola, his former mentor at the Eithad, and will clearly use the City boss and his team as an example for this Burnley side to learn from.

Before sharing a post-match glass of wine with Guardiola, Kompany was asked about City. He added: "The only thing I would say is that they were consistent my time, they're still consistent now, which says something about the level of manager and the culture of place.

"If I could play this game 10 times over, I'd do it again and again and again until we find something, find a way. Because this is the way you learn, in my opinion."
