Troy Deeney has revealed the stark warning he was given by a prison guard, at the start of his 10 month sentence during his career.

Deeney is best known for his time at Watford, where he played over 400 times for the club, scoring 140 times, and becoming the club captain.

He will always be remembered for his famous play-off goal against Leicester City, 10 years ago, when the Hornets counter attacked from a penalty to go up the other end of the pitch and score.

Deeney twice finished a Championship runner-up with the club and also helped them reach the FA Cup final, where they unfortunately go battered by Manchester City.

During his time at the club, before he scored the play-off goal, the striker went to prison for 10 months, having plead guilty for affray.

His story of redemption, from prison to coming back and being a big part of a decent Premier League team, certainly makes for an interesting read.

And now the Birmingham City player, playing for the club in the city he was born, has revealed the warning that he was given when he first got to prison.

"So I went to K-Wing, which is like a working wing for people that aren't really in trouble or workers," the 34-year-old explained on JaackMaate's Happy Hour podcast.

"I go there, and the guy [prison guard] goes - I've got my little bag of stuff - and he goes: 'Troy, you're in room... I say room - cell'.

"And then, 'just to let you know, they've all got the paper, so they all know who you are - good luck!'

"And then he pushed me in and shuts the door."

Deeney's prison sentence began just days after he had attended his father's funeral, and he had a run in with some of his dad's old friends.

They didn't know that his father had died and warned him that his dad would have 'filled him in' if he was also in the prison, showing their disappointment in the footballer.

The striker explained that they offered their condolences when they learned of his father's passing.

Deeney certainly isn't the only player who has come back from the adversity of being in prison, and last year Maidenhead United striker Adrian Clifton shared his appreciation to Ian Wright for helping him turn his life around.
