Trent Alexander Arnold is in action for England

Fans can’t quite get their heads around what shirt number Trent Alexander Arnold will wear for England.

After the 22/23 domestic season came to a close last weekend, international football now takes centre stage.

Gareth Southgate’s England side have two Euro qualifying matches against Malta on Friday night and North Macedonia on Monday night.

Ahead of the match on Friday night, fans have been left in disbelief after seeing Alexander Arnold’s shirt number.

Against Malta, the Liverpool star is set to play in a more advanced midfield role instead of his usual full-back role.

During the back end of the domestic season, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp switched Alexander Arnold's role in order to allow him to have more impact on the match.

As a result, Alexander Arnold has been given the number 10 shirt for the match. Fans were quick to react on social media.

One said: “Well that’s Interesting.”

Another tweeted: “Excuse me?”

A third fan added: “What is that? The game’s gone I’m afraid, he is a defender.”

Someone else wrote: “No way that does not suit him…”

Whilst a fifth commented: “He better be turning up in the midfield cos it would be an eyesore to be watching a No. 10 defending crosses into the box.”

Ahead of the match, Southgate hinted that Alexander Arnold could be deployed in midfield.

He said: “Well, let’s see! You know that I think he is more than capable of playing there and it can be really exciting. If we were to do that, we would not be expecting perfection.

“There’s a lot to learn, particularly without the ball. It is different areas of the pitch. With the ball, that is a more straightforward transition for him. He has been playing there a little bit more for his club so it is something for us to consider, definitely.”
