Manchester United Tried To Sell One Player On Transfer Deadline Day

The Red Devils had done all their incoming business by signing Alexis Sanchez earlier in January but wanted one man out.

Other than being played with by Spurs in the final third of the Wembley pitch it was a pretty quiet transfer deadline day for Manchester United. However according to another club the Red Devils were trying to sell one of their players.

Manchester United had already caused some of the biggest headlines of the transfer window when they first tried to sign Alexis Sanchez from under Manchester City's noses and then achieved that goal when City pulled out of the race.

Jose Mourinho left it to the rest of the Premier League on deadline day with Arsenal, Chelsea and City the clubs who kept the men outside their training grounds interested for the day.

Earlier in the transfer window some players had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but the manager said that only Axel Tuanzebe would be allowed to leave, with the young defender leaving on loan to Aston Villa.

However there were rumours that Roma wanted to sign Daley Blind but, as per Calcio Mercato, the Italian club's sporting director Monchi denied those claims, saying the Dutchman had actually been offered to them:

"We started to hear something about Emerson [Palmieri] before the transfer window opened. Blind was one of many names, he was offered and we evaluated him.

"We concluded he wasn't a player suited to us, not least for financial reasons."

Their former back-up left back Emerson Palmieri left for Chelsea, with the Blues paying a reported €20 million plus add ons for the 23 year old, and the suggestion is that Roma needed a replacement and looked at Blind.

The versatile defensive player's father, Danny, who is also his agent talked about the move to LaRoma24 yesterday saying, "Italy would be an interesting choice for him, but Manchester United is a huge club that doesn't need to sell players and doesn't need the money.

"Mourinho wants to keep this group together. Maybe if we had a few days, a week perhaps [a deal would be possible], but we've only got a few hours, so it's really very difficult."

Blind is likely to leave in the summer.
