Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Mauricio Pochettino, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's long term future at Old Trafford in doubt after the 6-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Solskjaer has come under pressure during several periods of his time in charge at United but he led them into third place last season, securing his job for the short term.

However United have had a poor start to this season and Solskjaer is now coming under fire from pundits and fans after the huge loss to Spurs at the weekend.

According to the Mirror, Ed Woodward won't be sacking the Norwegian in the current international break but senior club chiefs have made contact with Pochettino's people, no doubt sounding him out about the possibility of him taking over at some point.

Pochettino made Spurs into a regular top four side in the league, and finished third twice and second once in the league, during his time in north London.

He took the side to their first ever Champions League final in 2019, before losing to Liverpool in Madrid, thanks in part to a first minute penalty.

The former Espanyol manager's fortunes quickly turned at Spurs though and he was sacked in the following November with his side in 14th, and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer replaced Mourinho at Old Trafford in December 2018 and after a good start to life as interim manager was offered the job permanently after his side's incredible comeback win against PSG.

The team's form fell off a cliff after that Champions League last 16 victory and they failed to qualify for the tournament for the next season.

Last season United did manage to get into the top four, with form improving tremendously following the addition of Bruno Fernandes and the break in the season.

United started this season with a loss against Crystal Palace at home and only just scraped by Brighton in their second match, needing a 100th minute penalty, before the humiliation at the hands of Spurs.

Solskjaer has been defended by some because of the club's inability to back him in the transfer window with his prefered players, or get in a director of football to oversee transfers.

Others have criticised the manager for not being good enough and Pochettino, who has reportedly turned down several jobs since leaving Tottenham, is seen as a step up in qualty.
