Manchester United look set to be handed a huge boost with goalkeeper David de Gea nearing an agreement for a new five year contract, with less than 18 months of his current deal left .

Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager of Manchester United in 2013 the club's most important player has been David de Gea, the goalkeeper has won the club's Player of the Season award for four of the five seasons.

Things haven't exactly gone great for the 13 time Premier League winners since their legendary manager hung up the chewing gum but they'd be in a much worse situation if it weren't for the Spaniard.

Even during the recent upturn in fortunes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, that's seen the interim boss win the Manager of the Month award, De Gea has been integral, especially in his performance in the 1-0 win over Spurs last month.

The thought of losing the former Atletico Madrid goalie would be enough to keep any United up late at night, never mind the manager, but with just 18 months left on his deal that remains a big prospect.

There's been a long stand-off between the club and the player with negotiations going on since the summer but according to the Metro that is set to come to an end with De Gea about to sign a new five year deal.

The 28 year old had wanted to be given parity with the club's top earners and the paper report that he will be given a £375,000 a week deal, making him one of the world's top paid players.

De Gea will be signed on till 2024 and will have a big increase on his £120k a week current deal. The extension would follow recent deals for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Solskjaer has won nine of his first 10 games with the only game they failed to win being the 2-2 draw with Burnley. when they came back from two goals down.

That form has put the Red Devils within striking distance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League next season.

With De Gea signed up and in the team for the long term anything is possible.
