Vincent Kompany has ruthlessly cut a high-profile player from his Bayern Munich squad, and it's got Liverpool fans talking.

Kompany takes charge of his first competitive game for Bayern tonight following his summer appointment.

His side take on second-tier German club Ulm in the first-round of the DFB-Pokal.

And ahead of the cup clash, Kompany has left out Leon Goretzka of his squad even though he's fully fit.

Goretzka's exclusion has prompted transfer frenzy, with Liverpool fans wanting the Germany international at Anfield amid a quiet transfer window.

One X user wrote: "Liverpool should buy that one."

A second said: "Liverpool as the 6 hopefully."

A third added: "Gortezka to Liverpool," accompanied with a folded hands emoji.

Liverpool have yet to sign anyone this summer and their fans have identified Goretzka as a possible signing ahead of the transfer deadline.

His omission from Kompany's squad is a clear sign that the 29-year-old is no longer a significant part of the club's plans moving forward.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Goretzka, who is contracted until 2026, wants to stay and fight for his place in the team.

The midfielder has been on the books at Bayern since 2018 following his switch from Schalke.

He has made 221 appearances across all competitions, scoring 40 goals and has won five Bundesliga titles during his trophy-laden spell at the Allianz Arena outfit.

The Reds seemed set to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad until the Spanish international turned down the club's proposal.

Goretzka could be an option this summer as Arne Slot hopes to strengthen his squad during the transfer window.

Speaking ahead of taking charge of his first Premier League game for Liverpool, he said: "I've said many times already that our squad is really strong and it's not so easy to find players who can help us or even strengthen the squad.

"Zubimendi was one of them to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. [Wataru] Endo did well in pre-season so we're in a good place.

"In the background, [sporting director] Richard [Hughes] is trying to strengthen the squad as he can but, unfortunately, Zubimendi decided not to come.

"He did every effort to bring him in but, if a player decides not to come, then it's obvious he's not coming."
