Former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has been linked with a move to a shock Premier League club.

Back in June, it was confirmed that Hummels had left Dortmund after losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the German said: “It was a huge honour and joy for me to have played for BVB for so long and to have been part of the journey from 13th place in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund represents today.

“This club and its fans are something very special - and for me even more than that.”

Since then, Hummels has been linked with a host of different clubs across the continent.

As reported by Sky Germany, Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion are the latest to be linked with the centre-back.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg wrote on social media: “Excl | Brighton, seriously considering to sign #Mats Hummels as a free agent.

“There was a phone call between coach Fabian Hürzeler and Hummels in the last days. About Brighton‘s project, Hummel‘s ambition and more. Brighton, very open to sign Hummels as an experienced central defender. 35 y/o has not yet made a final decision whether to continue or end his career.”

In addition, West Ham United are also said to be monitoring the situation. Plettenberg added: “West Ham are also monitoring the situation of Mats Hummels. WHUFC considering to bring in one more experienced central defender this window. Hummels is on their list.

“A late attempt from West Ham is not excluded. Instead, Bologna have withdrawn their offer for Hummels as per @DiMarzio. But: It is also possible that Hummels will end his career. There are corresponding thoughts, but no final decision yet.”

So far this summer, the Seagulls have completed deals to sign midfielder Amario Cozier-Duberry from Arsenal, Malick Junior Yalcouye from IFK Goteborg, Nordsjaelland winger Ibrahim Osman, Dutchman Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord and Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United.

Speaking after their pre-season win over Queens Park Rangers, new Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “We are not where we want to be but we are going in the right direction. We are happy, we know are not perfect but we also know that the process takes time. We are trying to integrate players and we have some injured players that are coming back.

“The team works hard and that is the most important thing. I like the attitude of the players and their willingness to improve.”
