Manchester United are reportedly in the race to sign their perfect replacement for Harry Maguire.

During the summer transfer window, Maguire’s future was plunged into darkness after being stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag.

The 30-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Premier League side West Ham United but despite both clubs reportedly agreeing a fee, a move never materialised.

Maguire stayed at United but his long-term future with the club remains uncertain.

Looking ahead, United are reportedly looking to beat Liverpool to the signature of Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio, who could serve as the perfect replacement for Maguire.

According to Football Insider, Portuguese club Sporting are resigned to losing their highly-rated defender.

It has been claimed that United have scouted the 22-year-old in recent weeks as manager Ten Hag begins to plan for the January transfer window.

Back in August, Inacio signed a new contract until the end of the 26/27 season with Sporting which includes a new release clause, believed to be £52 million.

Previously, Inacio’s contract reportedly contained a release clause of just £39 million as Liverpool and Newcastle United were linked with the centre half.

In the 22/23 season, Inacio impressed after making 52 appearances across all competitions, scoring four and assisting three.

During last month’s international, Inacio scored twice during Portugal’s massive 9-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Luxembourg.

With his performances getting better and better, many clubs around the continent will be keeping a close eye on Inacio and United will have to act fast if they are serious about signing the Portuguese.
