West Ham United could make a transfer return for Manchester United's Harry Maguire this summer, 12 months on from their failed approach to sign the defender.

The 31-year-old appeared to have no future at Old Trafford beyond last summer, after he struggled for game time under new United boss Erik ten Hag last season.

Ten Hag also took the decision to strip Maguire of the captaincy at Old Trafford and handed it to Bruno Fernandes, further raising questions about the defender's long-term future in Manchester.

At one stage, it appeared that Maguire would move on to pastures new, after United accepted a bid worth £30m from West Ham for the England international.

However, the move did not materialise as Maguire opted to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place in Ten Hag's side.

Thanks to injuries to other defenders ahead of him in the pecking order, Maguire has been granted opportunities this season at United and has often impressed when given the chances.

Maguire has two goals in 23 games for the Old Trafford side in all competitions this season, and his form has meant his continued inclusion in Gareth Southgate's England squad ahead of Euro 2024 this summer, with the centre-half poised to be in the Three Lions starting team, should he not be injured or lose form significantly.

Maguire's United contract runs until the summer of 2025, while the club have the option to extend the defender's deal by an extra 12 months.

After West Ham failed in their bid to sign Maguire last summer, it is being reported David Moyes' side could return to try and sign the England defender once again.

According to The Sun, Maguire could be available to the Hammers for between £15m and £20m this summer, with his sale allowing United to raise transfer funds and allow room for new arrivals at Old Trafford.

It is claimed that West Ham could offer a contract of between two and three years, the latter of which would take the defender beyond his 34th birthday.

It will be an interesting summer for Maguire and where he will be playing his football next season.
