Chelsea have reportedly inserted a clause into Jadon Sancho’s loan deal that could prevent them from having to buy the Englishman.

Since moving to Old Trafford from German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of £73 million back in 2021, Sancho has struggled to perform to his best.

The 24-year-old’s public spat with manager Erik ten Hag meant his future at the club was thrown into chaos.

On transfer deadline day, it was confirmed that Sancho will leave Manchester United and spend the 24/25 season on loan at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by the BBC, the deal includes an obligation for the Blues to sign the winger on a permanent deal for a fee ranging from £20 - £25 million next summer.

However, it has now been claimed one clause in the loan deal could prevent Chelsea from signing Sancho permanently.

According to The Telegraph’s James Ducker, Chelsea will have to buy Sancho from United as long as they finish in the top 14 in the Premier League.

Although unlikely, Chelsea will be dealt a blow in their bid to sign Sancho if they finish 15th or lower.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano wrote on social media: “Jadon Sancho, Chelsea and Man Utd signed all docs in time as deal is 100% done. Loan with obligation to buy guaranteed, formally if CFC will finish among first 14 position in PL table.

“Fee starts from £20m guaranteed up to £25m in add-ons based on performances.”

Following Sancho’s arrival, Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has left the club as he joined London rivals Arsenal on loan.

Speaking after sealing the deal, Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar said: “To be fair we never planned really to sign him when we started the transfer window, just to be very transparent, for different reasons. But we always say to everyone that you have to be prepared for every single scenario. So when that opportunity came to me, and I checked the squad, I checked how he plays, and spoke to Mikel of course. I spoke to Tim [Lewis], our vice-chairman, to check if everyone is comfortable for the step we are going to take, and it makes a lot of sense.

“It makes a lot of sense to have someone like him because I’m pretty sure he is going to add a lot in the squad. He has experience, he understands more than anyone the league, he’s played in the Champions League many times. He won the Premier League a few times as well, so I think he can add a lot to our squad and I feel really happy to see someone like him in our squad.”
