Arsenal could be given a huge summer transfer boost after Xabi Alonso’s decision.

Over the last few months, since Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the 23/24 season, Spaniard Alonso has been tipped to be the next manager at Anfield.

In addition, with Thomas Tuchel set to leave Bayern Munich in the summer, Alonso has also been linked with the Bavarian club.

However, it was revealed last week that Alonso will be staying with Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season.

As a result, Arsenal could now be given a huge boost in their pursuit of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted: “Understand Martin Zubimendi remains on Arsenal list. And he was on top of Bayern list in case Xabi Alonso was gonna become their new coach.

“Bayern still appreciates Zubimendi as one of the targets but final decision will be up to next manager. It's all quiet with Barca.”

It has been previously reported that Zubimendi could command a fee in the region of £51 million.

With Alonso now unlikely to go to Bayern, their interest in Zubimendi could be cooled, paving the way for Arsenal to sign the Spaniard.

Speaking previously about his future, Zubimendi said: “I have never planned to leave Real Sociedad, I always say that. I love life here, at home, I’m so happy here.

“The values of this club are the same as mine so I feel very good, I always said that I’m happy.”

Explaining his decision to stay with Leverkusen, Alonso said: “I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, and I informed them that I will stay and continue at the club.

“After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place for me.”

He added: “My job at Bayer is not over. I want to help the club, help the players to develop. The board is great - it's all fantastic here.

“I'm still a young coach, but I think this is the best decision for my future. I took my time and I'm sure about that.”
