What Bayer Leverkusen fans did for Xabi Alonso after late win in first game since Liverpool snub revealed

Xabi Alonso spoke about his future this week amid links with Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

What Bayer Leverkusen fans did for Xabi Alonso after yet another late win speaks volumes.

This season, Leverkusen have been impressing many football fans around the world after their brilliant start to the 23/24 season.

With just a few months left of the campaign, Alonso’s men remain unbeaten as they sit top of the Bundesliga table, more than 10 points ahead of Bayern Munich.

As a result of Alonso’s impressive work, the Spaniard has been linked with both Liverpool and Bayern, who are looking for new managers to take over from the summer.

This week, Alonso pledged his future with Leverkusen, he said: “I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, and I informed them that I will stay and continue at the club.

“After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place for me.”

On Saturday, Leverkusen scored in the 88th and 91st minute as they came from one down to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 to preserve their unbeaten streak.

After the final whistle, the Leverkusen players called on Alonso to go in front of the home fans, who gave the Spaniard a brilliant standing ovation. You can watch the footage below.

Explaining his decision to snub interests from Liverpool and Bayern, Alonso added: “My job at Bayer is not over. I want to help the club, help the players to develop. The board is great - it's all fantastic here.

“I'm still a young coach, but I think this is the best decision for my future. I took my time and I'm sure about that.”

Speaking about Alonso’s decision, Jurgen Klopp said: “I can speak about a young manager being at a club where he’s doing really well.

“I did pretty much the same, and never regretted it. I can understand why he wants to do that.”

Now, the likes of Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi have become the frontrunners to become the new Liverpool manager.
