A fan thinks Steven Gerrard has better technique than most current Premier League midfielders after a clip of him scoring at the weekend went viral.

The 42-year-old returned to Anfield on Saturday to play for Liverpool Legends in what was an entertaining LFC Foundation clash against Celtic.

Featuring alongside Luis Garcia, Dirk Kuyt and Martin Skrtel, the former England international opened the scoring with a penalty before celebrating in front of the travelling Celtic support.

That's right. After sending goalkeeper Artur Boruc the wrong way, he taunted 4,000 Hoops' fans inside Anfield with a 'shush' celebration.

Liverpool went on the win the game 2-0 after Mark Gonzalez doubled their lead, just seconds into the second-half.

Gerrard, meanwhile, was the biggest talking point both before and during the game at Anfield. Ahead of kick-off, the former Rangers boss was doing some pre-game training drills when he arrowed a shot into the top corner.

The clip soon went viral, with fans applauding his trademark technique from distance.

In fact, Twitter user @Virg_VD posted Gerrard's goal with the caption: "Blokes 42 and still has better technique than most prem midfielders Jesus Christ."

Here's how fans reacted to Gerrard's sublime effort.

One said: "Nah they need to make an over 40s European Super League I'd watch the f**k out of that. I could watch Kaka Pirlo vs Gerrard Alonso my entire life," while another wrote: "Bring him out of retirement and play him over Fabinho."

A third commented: "I know you'd expect most prem players to be able to do this in a warm up but they can't. Might be the cleanest strike of a football I've ever seen."

A fourth said: "I think he would have been a better player for Villa than manager."

A fifth added: "If Stevie went Serie A after Liverpool I think he could’ve played for another 3/4 years. Would’ve helped in his coaching career too."

In the aftermath of Gerrard's appearance for Liverpool Legends at the weekend, TV presenter and pundit Richard Keys suggested the former Reds midfielder should ditch his affiliation with the club if he wants to resurrect his managerial career.

"If Gerrard still has ambitions to manage or coach in the Premier League I really think he should be swerving the legends games - the likes of which we saw at Anfield last weekend," he wrote in his latest blog post.

"Gerrard needs to distance himself from Liverpool for a few years more yet. One of his biggest problems at Villa was that their fans largely saw him as Liverpool’s captain. It was ok to start with - Gerrard said all the right things, but as time progressed and things weren’t going so well, it was an easy stick to beat him with - even though he’d had those two years at Rangers as well.

"Perhaps he’s given up believing that he’s got a coaching career, but if he hasn’t, I firmly believe he’s definitely got to give those games up. Either way - he shouldn’t be taunting Celtic fans as he did after scoring."

Keys added: "I know it’s hard and I know they’d been on at him all through the game - but he’s a big boy and he knows it’s all part of the gig. Those fans had paid their money to charity (the players always get paid btw) and so they had a right to get involved in the occasion."
