Socceroos qualify for World Cup round of 16 for first time since 2006

It was a nail-biting final group matchday that saw Tunisia and the Socceroos battle it out for the second spot in the group.

Australia has qualified for the World Cup round of 16 after a 1-0 win over Denmark.

It was a nail-biting final group match day that saw Tunisia and the Socceroos battle it out for the second spot in the group.

Tunisia had etched in front of world champions France with a surprising goal that saw them overtake Graham Arnold’s men in the group.

But just minutes later Matthew Leckie scored a wonderful solo effort to send Australia into raptures across the country and overseas.

Hearts stopped when referee Mustapha Ghorbal blew for a penalty for Denmark, only for it to be ruled off for offside.

Aussie fans were on the edge of their seats for the next 26 minutes, crying out for the full-time whistle.

Players, staff, and fans alike felt pure ecstasy when the whistle finally blew.

It confirmed Australia’s progression into the round of 16 for the first time since they qualified in Germany in 2006.

They will face the winner of Group C in the next stage of the tournament.

It will be their first World Cup knockout game since the heartbreaking tie against Italy in 2006.

Australian fans couldn’t hold in their joy.
