Donny van de Beek made his first appearance for Manchester United on Saturday, in a friendly against Aston Villa, and his highlights reel will excite United fans.

United and Villa's start to the season has been delayed until next weekend so they faced each other at Villa Park on Saturday to continue their preparation.

Van de Beek, who signed from Ajax this summer, pulled off one beautiful piece of skill during the game, but his highlights made a decent watch as he clearly made Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side tick and made several chances.

And his beautiful back heel also landed at the feet of Daniel James, who might have done better with his shot, as the impressive first showing for Van de Beek showed off all his skills.

United's campaign last season was changed by the addition of Bruno Fernandes in January and then further helped by Paul Pogba's return from injury after the break from lockdown.

That has led some to question the signing of Dutchman Van de Beek for around £40 million, with Solskjaer's team clearly needing strengthening in other places.

Claiming the transfer was a 'panic buy', Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson recently said, "I don't get it. They just spent £40m on a position where they are already strong. And how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes?

"You have to have someone who can play the holding role."

The Red Devils have been linked with several players in recent weeks, with left backs Sergio Reguilon and Alex Telles both reportedly interesting the Premier League side.

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago has also been linked and United are still trying to sign number one target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

The team had the start of their season delayed because of their involvement in the Europa League in August, as did local rivals Manchester City for their involvement in the Champions League.

They were due to face Burnley on game week one but will instead open their league campaign against Crystal Palace next weekend.

Villa would have faced City this weekend but will start against Sheffield United next weekend, although they will face Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup in midweek first.
