Samuel Eto'o's Morocco World Cup prediction is still on course to happen

Samuel Eto'o's Morocco World Cup prediction is still on course to happen

Samuel Eto'o's prediction was scoffed at but looks like it might just come true.

Samuel Eto'o's Morocco World Cup prediction is just one game away from happening.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan star hit headlines at the start of the tournament when he predicted a historic all-African final between his native Cameroon and Morocco.

Eto'o played in four World Cups with his country but failed to reach the knockout stages every time, However, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation rather ambitiously tipped the Indomitable Lions to go all the way in Qatar and beat Morocco.

Despite a last-gasp win against Brazil in their final group stage fixture, Cameroon finished third and so suffered an early elimination.

However, Eto'o's crystal ball was working just fine when it came to Morocco, who have been the underdog story of the inaugural winter World Cup.

Yet to taste defeat, Walid Regragui's side topped Group F ahead of Croatia with seven points and have gone on to cause huge upsets with wins over Spain and Portugal in the last 16 and quarter-finals respectively.

They will now take on holders France in the semi-finals, becoming the first African side to reach that stage.

They are just one win away from fulfilling Eto'o's prediction, though he forecasted beating Portugal and then Spain in a different order.

Speaking before the tournament, Eto'o said: "During the years, African teams have acquired more and more experience, and I think they're ready not only to participate in a World Cup, but also to win it."

Backed by an incredibly passionate fanbase, dogged Morocco have left absolutely everything on the pitch and defended for their lives.

They have conceded just once in the tournament and that was an own goal against Canada.

Eto's prediction looked a little outrageous prior to the tournament, especially given Morocco had only appointed Regragui as manager in August.

But they've performed exceptionally and we await to see what they can conjure up against France at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.
