VAR Hands Manchester United Controversial Opener Against Liverpool

It looked like Victor Lindelof had fouled Divock Origi in the build up to the opening goal but VAR failed to overturn the decision.

Manchester United took the lead in their game against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon but once again there was controversy surrounding VAR, with United benefitting twice.

The Red Devils went into the game at Old Trafford as big underdogs against their rivals, with Jurgen Klopp's side flying high at the top of the table and 15 points clear of United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team started well though and in the 40th minute took the lead through Marcus Rashford. But it looked for certain like it would be ruled out by VAR after a foul by Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi, but it was allowed to stand.

Liverpool fans had even more to bemoan when the video assistant referee rejected what looked like an equaliser when Sadio Mane looked to have scored.

The Senegalese forward was adjudged to have handled the ball in the lead up to the game, in accordance with the new rules that sees any goal assisted by a hand ruled out, as Manchester City felt earlier in the season against Spurs.

It certainly was a better 45 minutes for the hosts than anyone was expecting as they stopped the visitors from having too many clear cut chances, the disallowed goal aside, and kept the ball for a similar amount of time to the opposition.

Can Solskjaer's team keep it going?
