Manchester United's latest signing Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender in world football when he arrived at Old Trafford this week for a whopping £80 million.

It's a transfer fee that eclipses the £75 million paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk and naturally, expectations will fall on his shoulders as we step into the new season.

Some fans have questioned whether the 26-year-old is worth such a fee in recent days.

But if take a look at the numbers behind his form last season, the stats prove he will become a crucial member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the coming months.

Norwegian sports journalist Jonas Giæver has crunched down the numbers and in short, United have bought a player that "will upgrade two key components to their play: passing and higher press."

He posted the following thread, detailing his ability to pass the ball out of defence, among other strengths.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also identified Maguire's strengths shortly after he penned a six-year contract with the club.

"Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature." he said.

"He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch with the ability to remain calm under pressure - coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes - I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.

"He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club. I would like to welcome Harry to Manchester United and we are looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the new season."
