A Number Of Premier League Clubs Want The 2019/20 Season To Be Abandoned With Immediate Effect

A Number Of Premier League Clubs Want The 2019/20 Season To Be Abandoned With Immediate Effect

It appears 'several' Premier League clubs want the current 2019/20 season to end with 'immediate effect' amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It would mean that Liverpool would not be crowned champions.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp's side are 25 points ahead of second place Manchester City in the title race, and without doubt deserve their first league title in 30 years after picking up 82 points out of a possible 87.

But some clubs have privately developed 'strong reservations' about resuming football during this difficult time.

In fact, these clubs are 'leaning towards' the season being re-run regardless of the consequences, report The Athletic.

A 'high-ranking' club official told the outlet that the Premier League must start the season again.

"It's absolutely clear what is going to happen. It's a worldwide pandemic," he said. "You just start [the season] again and there are very few losers. Liverpool, I know. But in the grand scheme of things, honestly, it really doesn't matter.

"We look like petulant, ridiculous children now. I passionately believe what we're doing is wrong."

Meanwhile another senior figure has claimed it would be morally wrong to play behind closed doors.

"You look at the people sitting around the Premier League table by Skype; their egos cannot sustain a mirror being held up to them," they said.

"The fact is they are not as important as a Tesco delivery driver at this time. We run a game. No more, no less. There is no place for sport at the moment."

West Ham chairman Karen Brady has already made her feelings clear in recent days.

She believes this Premier League season should be considered 'null and void' if it can't be finished due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"Suspension or cancellation of the league was always a certainty," Brady wrote in her column for The Sun.

"There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can't play the games can't go ahead.

"The PL hopes that an interlude of three weeks from today will enable it to restart but that may well be dreamland.

"So what if the league cannot be finished? As games in both the PL and in the EFL are affected, the only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.

"Who knows who would have gone down or come up if the games have not actually been played in full?

"A huge blow to Liverpool who might be robbed of their first title in 30 years. This will be discussed between the PL and the clubs next week at an emergency meeting."

The next Premier League shareholders meeting will take place on April 3rd, where discussions will once again take place regarding the current 2019/20 campaign and beyond.

Thoughts on the current situation? Should the Premier League be considered null and void?
