Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went from hero to villain for Arsenal on Thursday night and after his miss in the dying moments he couldn't really find the words to discuss it.

Arsenal were dumped out of the Europa League thanks in part to their captain missing as straightforward a chance as he's likely to be on the end of in the dying seconds of the match.

It came just moments after Youssef El-Arabi's winner for Olympiakos and just minutes after his own wonder strike looked to have won the game for Mikel Arteta's side and after the match he was pretty devastated.

The Gunners went into the last 32 second leg game with a 1-0 advantage, after Alexandre Lacazette had scored a late winner in Greece, and would have been looking to make it into the last 16 with victory in the tournament their best chance of Champions League qualification.

After a stalemate in the first half Pape Abou Cisse scored the opener on the night, and levelled the tie, in the 53rd minute before the away side held on to take the game into extra time.

Aubameyang scored his wonder goal in the 113th minute. The Gabon striker rising to volley the ball with an overhead kick into the back of the net.

Just as it seemed the Premier League side would make it into the next round they conceded a late corner. Failure to clear the ball fully allowed Olympiakos a second chance to cross the ball in and El-Arabi was the man who got on the end of it, sparking incredible scenes.

There was still time for Aubameyang's miss though. The ball got played into the Olympiakos box and pinged off a couple of players, it landed just behind the former Borussia Dortmund forward's feet, he swivelled and shot but hit it wide from just eight yards out.

It was a huge shame for the player who has done so much to help them get as far as they had and whose strike early in the night had nearly got them into the last 16.

Instead the Gunners are left chasing the seven point gap in the league to catch up with fourth place Chelsea and secure a place in next season's Champions League.

With only a year left on his deal in the summer, they may be without Aubameyang in the next campaign should they fail to make up that gap.
