Paris Saint-Germain have activated the buy-back clause in Xavi Simons' contract at PSV, meaning he has 25 days to communicate his final decision.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined PSV Eindhoven from PSG last summer after turning down a new long-term contract at the Parc des Princes, enjoyed a wonderful debut campaign with the Eredivisie club.

Simons notched 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions as PSV qualified for next season's Champions League with a second-place finish.

As a result of his impressive form, a number of clubs have been heavily linked with a move for the Netherlands international, including Premier League outfit Arsenal.

But a clever clause in his contract at PSV means former club Paris Saint-Germain are in pole position to re-sign the talented midfielder.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims Paris Saint-Germain, who currently have no manager after sacking Christophe Galtier, have communicated that they will activate the €6 million [£5.1m] buy-back clause for Simons.

Romano also states that buy-back clause expires on July 31, which means the player has to communicate within 25 days about whether he accepts PSG or not.

PSV head coach Peter Bosz, who recently took over after Ruud van Nistelrooy decided to leave his post, recently provided an update on the situation.

"I spoke to Xavi Simons - it was a good, positive conversation," he said. "But at the end, he will decide by himself."

The ball is very much in Simons' court with the summer transfer window in full swing. It has been reported, however, that the player is 'reluctant to return to PSG' after making just 11 senior appearances for the club ahead of his move to PSV.

Earlier this season, Simons said it was "not in my head to leave" and has "no obligations to anyone" amid rumours over his future.

“It is a clause between me and PSV. Not between me and Paris Saint-Germain,” Simons told reporters. “It’s a clause that, if I wanted to go to PSG, I could leave for a certain amount at the end of the season.

“To be honest, it’s not in my head to leave. I’m settled here, I feel good here. You can also see that on the field I think.

“I came here on a free transfer, so I have no obligations to anyone. I’m the one who has to make the choice."

Thoughts on Simons' future? Should he re-join PSG this summer?
