Michael Oliver will referee a Premier League fixture at the weekend amid a PGMOL investigation into abuse he received following a decision made during Arsenal's 1-0 win over Wolves.

Last weekend, Oliver made the controversial decision to send off Myles Lewis-Skelly after the Arsenal defender fouled Matt Doherty.

The call was checked and confirmed by Darren England, with the VAR deeming Lewis-Skelly to have committed "serious foul play" in the 43rd minute at Molineux.

After the full-time whistle, Mikel Arteta said he was "absolutely fuming" with the decision, while former Manchester City defender Micah Richards branded it "the worst decision in Premier League history".

Richards added: "How on earth can they go to VAR, look at it multiple times and still think is a red? It was so poor."

The PGMOL released a statement on Sunday confirming that an investigation has been launched after 'abhorrent' threats were made towards Oliver and his family in the wake of the match.

"We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture," the statement read.

"No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.

"The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced. We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.

"Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations."

Amid the controversy, Oliver will take charge of Saturday afternoon's Premier League fixture between Ipswich Town and Southampton.

In fact, the 39-year-old has been handed the rescheduled Merseyside derby fixture at Goodison Park on February 12, according to the Daily Mail.

As per the above report, Oliver and his partner woke up on Sunday morning to see a police car on their street.

They were told that the police were checking on their safety after a death threat was made against Oliver and his two-year-old daughter. It is said the Metropolitan Police passed the issue on to his local force.
