Two Premier League clubs made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Michael Olise's transfer to Bayern Munich, it has emerged.

Olise, who scored 10 goals in 18 league games for Crystal Palace last season, has been strongly linked with a move away from Selhurst Park after an impressive campaign.

A host of European clubs have expressed an interest, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Chelsea, who looked nailed on to sign the Frenchman.

But on Friday, it emerged that Chelsea pulled out of a deal to sign Olise as they felt the finances involved were 'beyond reach'.

Chelsea made contact with Palace last week to express their interest, according to The Athletic, and talks took place after they requested permission to speak with Olise's camp.

However, it appears the 22-year-old winger will join Bundesliga side Bayern Munich instead, with the German club expected to agree a deal in the not-so-distant future.

Now, it has emerged that two Premier League clubs made 'extraordinary' late offers to sign Olise.

The Mirror claim Manchester City and Manchester United were beaten to the punch by Bayern, despite making extraordinary late offers to delay the transfer by 12 months.

That's right. City and United are understood to have explored a deal which would have allowed Palace to keep Olise for another season.

The report goes on to state that City failed to get a deal over the line because of ongoing concerns around financial fair play.

United, meanwhile, could not afford Olise. The winger, who only signed a four-year contract at Selhurst Park in August last year, is understood to have a £60 million release clause.

United were urged to sign Olise, as well as another Premier League player, by former defender Wes Brown, who is a big fan of the France U21 international.

“I'm very realistic and I'm the sort of person that always thinks about you know, who's already done it in the Premier League?" he told SPORTbible.

“I think we need some really solid lads from other teams who have done really well. I would say Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, I think he’s exciting. He's got this rawness about him, he doesn't look afraid of anything.”

Brown added: “And I think the obvious one is someone in defence. And Jarrad Branthwaite for me, is a young lad and he's still learning, but he's big, strong and quick. And I just feel that he would help out tremendously.”
