Luis Enrique Rejected Premier League Job Despite ‘Successful’ Interview

The Paris Saint-Germain boss could have joined a top Premier League club, but decided against the move for one reason.

A close friend of Luis Enrique has revealed that the Paris Saint-Germain turned down a top Premier League club after having a successful interview.

There is no doubt that Enrique is one of the best managers currently working in football.

Having won nine major trophies with Barcelona, including the Champions League in 2015, and another ten with Paris Saint-Germain, the Spaniard is one of the most successful managers in the world.

It therefore comes as no surprise that current club PSG are eager to tie the 55-year-old down to a new contract ahead of his current deal expiring in 2027.

However, reports have suggested that Enrique is instead planning to leave the French giants in the near future, with a move to the Premier League believed to be possible, despite the fact he previously turned down a move to a top English side.

Following their dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have reportedly placed Enrique on top of a four-man shortlist of long-term replacements that they will target in the summer.

But it wasn't United that came close to signing Enrique previously, as close friend Graham Hunter has revealed that Enrique had a successful interview with Chelsea ahead of joining PSG in July 2023 but turned down the move to Stamford Bridge for one reason.

"I'm close friends with Luis Enrique. Before he took over at PSG, he had a very successful interview with Clearlake at Cobham for the Chelsea job," Hunter told talkSPORT.

"He said, "I'm not taking that job". He saw exactly what Maresca has suffered. And I know because he told us in the making of the documentary that we had with him. He saw interfering owners, 62 directors of football and there's a problem coming."

Of course, Enrique has gone on to win nearly everything available to him at PSG, with potentially the only notable loss of his tenure ironically being at the hands of Chelsea during the 2025 Club World Cup final.

Should Enrique choose to leave PSG either this summer or following the end of his contract next year, it is likely that the will have the option to take over almost any club in football, with several Premier League sides guaranteed to be interested.

And according to recent reports, it's looking more and more likely that this will be the case, with a report from Marca claiming that he recently turned down an extension as he plans to take on a new challenge once the current season is over
