Phil Foden had request turned down in 4-0 win over Chelsea

Phil Foden scored in Manchester City's 4-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday but had a request turned down.

Phil Foden had a request to take a penalty turned down in Manchester City's 4-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Foden was on target as City beat Chelsea for a third time this season, bagging the third in the comfortable FA Cup third round round victory.

But he also wanted to double his tally in the second half after winning a second half penalty. Foden was fed in behind by Bernardo Silva and was clumsily bundled over by Kalidou Koulibaly inside the area.

Referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot and Foden fancied his chances. However, Riyad Mahrez, already on the scoresheet courtesy of a fine free-kick to open the floodgates, would not budge.

The Algerian star had missed three of his last four penalties for City but having already found the net twice against Chelsea this term, was feeling confident.

He promptly smashed the ball in past Kepa Arrizabalaga, who dived the wrong way. World Cup winner Julian Alvarez had also squeezed a spot-kick past the Spaniard despite his attempts to get in his head in the first half after Kai Havertz's horrific handball.

"The first one Julian asked me, and I said yes because I was thinking he’s a striker and it’s important for them to score - he just came back from the World Cup and it’s his first game as well, so I was thinking let him take the penalty and score," Mahrez revealed after the game, as per the Manchester Evening News.

"I was thinking if I have a second one, I’ll take it and even Phil when he asked me, I wanted to let him shoot but I was thinking I let Julián take the first one, so I had to take this one. Phil scored a goal, Julian Alvarez scored, I scored - everyone was involved - that’s the most important."

Foden is yet to take a penalty in a game for City, but has done so in shoot-outs. He rolled one in against Liverpool in the Community Shield but missed the decisive spot-kick against West Ham in the Carabao Cup last season.

The England international now has eight goals in all competitions and City will be hoping he can replicate his performance in the previous meeting against Manchester United in this Saturday's derby.

Foden and Erling Haaland both hit hat-tricks in a 6-3 trouncing for the Premier League champions in the reverse fixture.
