Well we didn't expect this one, today...

Luke Shaw's career hit rock bottom when Jose Mourinho decided to take haul him off after just 45 minutes of Manchester United's game against Brighton in the FA Cup.

It was a reality check to some supporters, who thought his fortunes may be on the up.

United's defence has come under-fire in recent weeks from a furious Mourinho and Shaw looks to be the prime suspect as far as the manager is concerned, with suggestions of a move away from Old Trafford lingering around the newspaper columns.

In fact, on this damp Tuesday morning, I climbed out of bed and looked at my phone to see Barcelona linked with a move for the left-back.

The Mirror report that Barca are interested in signing the England international. Shaw is believed to be 'on their radar' ahead of the summer transfer window, as they believe he will be a 'good value' addition to the squad.

It is also believed that Shaw is fully aware of the Spanish club's interest.

The 22-year-old would compete with Jordi Alba for a first team place, as Lucas Digne appears to be on his way out of the club after growing frustrated at a lack of minutes.

Mourinho has been relatively vocal with his criticism of Shaw in months gone and his latest outburst during the FA Cup win over Brighton was the tip of the iceberg.

He received a lot of criticism from the sidelines during the first half from the vocal Portuguese boss and has completely fallen out of favour.

A close source of United defender Shaw has brandished Mourinho's treatment of the player as an "absolute disgrace" and "disgusting".

"Mourinho's treatment of Luke is an absolute disgrace. If he has a problem with him the decent thing to do would be to keep it in-house. If this kind of abuse happened in any other workplace there'd be a case for constructive dismissal. It's disgusting," the source exclaimed, via Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

Imagine the scenes. Luke Shaw hurdling up and down the touchline, feeding Lionel Messi crosses on a regular basis. We can't exactly imagine that scene just yet, but who knows.

It would certainly be a great move for the left-back. Watch this space.
