The Greatest XI In Football History Has Been Named

Spanish news outlet AS have named the greatest XI in football history, with a 16-person panel of journalists and columnists having their say.

The first part of the process saw an XI submitted from the following contributors: Alfredo Relano, Alvaro Benito, Santiago Segurola, Dani Garrido, Enrique Ortego, Axel Torres, Jose Samano, Kiko Narvaez, Luis Nieto, Manu Carreño, Jose Samano, Vicente Jimenez, Aritz Gabilondo, Cristian Arcos, Alejandro Gomez, Sarah Castro and Jose Luis Garci.

After that, the players who were selected most frequently then made up the overall 'AS Legends XI'. The result was one of the most star-studded, attack-minded sides you have ever seen.

Centre-back stalwarts Sergio Ramos and Franz Beckenbauer form two thirds of a three-man backline along with former rampaging left-back and free-kick king Roberto Carlos.

Xavi Hernandez, one of the best and most decorated midfielders ever to play the game, controls the midfield on his own and allows the breathtaking talents of Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff and Pele to do their thing.

The very best in the modern game, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with their eleven Ballon d'Or wins between them, are joined by the iconic Alfredo Di Stefano in attack - completing the glorious team in a crazy 3-1-3-3 formation.

Notable omissions includes the likes of Lev Yashin, Paolo Maldini, Andres Iniesta, Zinedine Zidane, Ferenc Puskas, Eusebio and Ronaldo Nazario but then again there have been so many wonderful players.
