Fans Are Now Arguing That Prime Luka Modric 'Is So Much Better' Than Andres Iniesta Ever Was

"What [Toni] Kroos and [Luka] Modric are doing now at this age, that is better than what Iniesta and Xavi did in their prime," one fan said.

A 'prime' Luka Modric has been branded as a better player than Andres Iniesta after the Real Madrid star's masterclass Champions League performance on Tuesday.

Los Blancos defeated Atalanta 3-1 at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano to secure their place in the quarter-finals of Europe's top-tier club competition.

Modric secured the Man of the Match award as he pulled the strings from midfield, which even left Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane in awe at his mesmerising display.

But fans have now clashed on social media in a heated war of words after the 35-year-old Croatian midfielder was compared to Barcelona legend Iniesta.

"He's 35. [Steven] Gerrard, [Frank] Lampard and Iniesta were playing in retirement leagues at this age," one fan boldly claimed.

Someone else tweeted: "So, so good man. [I don't know] why people act like thinking he is [a] top three [midfielder] or better than Iniesta is something very wrong to say."

While a third Twitter user wrote: "What [Toni] Kroos and Modric are doing now at this age, that is better than what Iniesta and Xavi did in their prime."

A fourth added: "They say Iniesta played in Japanese league when he was 35. Modric is making [the] UCL look like [the] Japanese league at 35. We're not the same."

Modric, who signed for Madrid in 2012, has won two La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, a Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups during a glittering career in Spain.

The Croatia international also scooped the Ballon d'Or award in 2018 as his side reached the World Cup final in Russia.

Iniesta, meanwhile, enjoyed incredible success for both Barcelona and Spain during his remarkable playing career.

The 36-year-old Spaniard won a whopping nine La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, six Copa del Reys and six Spanish Super Cups at the Camp Nou.

Iniesta also lifted the Euros twice with Spain and won the World Cup in 2010.

The former Spain international left Barcelona in 2018 and signed for Japanese side Vissel Kobe.
