“If he [Jesse Lingard] didn’t come from the academy he’d be playing in the championship,” one Manchester United fan argued. Ouch!

Manchester United fans are outraged that the Red Devils are preparing to offer Jesse Lingard a new contract after a subpar season.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder made 36 appearances across all competitions last season and only managed to score five times and registered four assists.

According to the Evening Standard, United are continuing to push through new deals for their players and are focused on tying down Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba and Lingard to new contracts.

But United fans have been frustrated with the underwhelming Lingard, whose current deal expires in 2021, and have vented their anger on social media.

Twitter user Jamie tweeted: "He is 27 [sic] and he is not good enough championship at best."

And fan Liam Riddell argued: "If he didn't come from the academy he'd be playing in the championship."

A third, Bas, angrily posted: "How on earth is that possible? If he proved one thing this season so far is that he isnt [sic] fit to play for Manchester United's first team. 3rd/4th option from the bench at best. Time for him to proceed his career elsewhere. No hate, just not good enough."

While BizMac added: "This performance doesn't deserve a reward. Anyone who gives this contract is sick upstairs and needs [a] mental reality check. This guy is trash and should be donated by the club. Am disgusted by this report. Disrespectful and embarrassing."

Lingard has made five appearances this season and failed to score or assist in any of the matches that he has played in so far.

But the England international did come close to scoring in United's 1-0 victory over Astana in the Europa League on Thursday at Old Trafford.

Lingard was heavily criticised in the summer after he posted a bizarre tour around his apartment in Miami.

And ex-Queens Park Rangers and Blackpool boss Ian Holloway argued that United should have transfer listed him for his behaviour on social media.

Should United offer Lingard a new deal?
