Atletico Madrid showcased their tough defending approach as the Spanish side deployed a '6-3-1 formation' against Chelsea in the Champions League.

Diego Simeone's men clashed with the Blues at the National Arena in Bucharest, Romania, in the first leg of their round-of-16 clash.

And Atletico, who are known for their strong defensive displays, turned that up a notch as they frustrated Chelsea before succumbing to a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday.

However, fans noticed that Simeone deployed a formation that featured six Atletico players in the backline.

Chelsea supporters were furious with the Atletico boss' tactics and blasted him for his 'over-the-top' defending style.

"How do Atletico fans watch this s**t every week," one fan said.

While another pointed out: "Not sure why they are playing so defensively when Chelsea was just passing sideways [sic] now they have started attacking."

Someone else tweeted: "This is exactly why I didn't watch this game--I saved myself some leisure time. I knew this is how Atletico would play."

And a fourth added: "Can't believe what [I] am seeing from Simeone."

Simeone's strong defensive approach was shattered in the second half as Olivier Giroud fired Chelsea into the lead with a stunning overhead kick.

The return leg will be played at Stamford Bridge on 17th March.
