The 34-year-old was given the nod up front this evening ahead of Tammy Abraham and was keen to impress.
His chance came in the 68th minute when a ball bobbled up in the air and Atletico's defence looked at sea.
Giroud flung himself high in the air and thumped it past Jan Oblak and straight into the bottom left corner.
Oh my, Olivier Giroud!
He just loves scoring worldies, doesn't he!?
VAR initially ruled the goal out but it stands as Mario Hermoso was deemed to have deflected the ball onto the Frenchman :raised_hands: pic.twitter.com/CAweQ8SzAR

A lengthy VAR review for offside came close to spoiling the fun and the goal was initially ruled out, but referee Felix Brych gave it to the Blues.
It means Giroud has now scored six goals in his last four Champions League games.
Fans have reacted to the strike and they think Giroud will go down as one of the most underrated strikers of his generation.
Olivier Giroud always coming up clutch for Chelsea, man. Hell of a goal, though.

Chelsea were the better side on the evening and managed to control possession throughout.
Atletico on the other hand, looked rather tame going forward and hadn't registered a single shot on target by the 75th minute.
The second leg will take place on March 17.
