Matthijs de Ligt partners Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Netherlands backline and he says he's open to linking up with him at club level.

The 19-year-old Ajax centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, potentially following in the footsteps as teammate Frenkie de Jong.

But he's likely to have a slew of clubs queuing up for his signature in the summer window, with Atletico Madrid reportedly joining the race.

And when asked about Netherlands skipper Van Dijk, as well as whether he could possibly join him on Merseyside, he didn't exactly play it coy.

"Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues," De Ligt told Goal.

"Of course, you would want to learn from him. It's very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.

"It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I'm not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I'll see where I end up."

De Ligt, the youngest captain in a Champions League knockout game after he eclipsed the record set by Cesc Fabregas when he skippered Ajax in the first leg against Real Madrid.

His brilliant leadership qualities and sublime football brain beyond his years was evident in the Amsterdam club's 4-1 smashing away at the Bernabeu on Tuesday and prompted Ajax's director of football Marc Overmars to heap praise on him.

"For me, de Ligt can play easily [in] any of the six best teams in the world right now," he told Diario AS.

"He has the power, the mentality, the heart. If I worked at another club, I would like to sign him immediately.

"We do not need to sell him, we do not need the money, but I know he will go to one of the big clubs [eventually]."
