Barcelona will face a challenge over the signing of Matthijs de Ligt after reports suggest that Atlético Madrid are interested in the player.

According to Marca, the Spanish club are preparing to reinforce their defensive options in the summer, with club captain Diego Godín linked with a move to Inter Milan and Bayern Munich wanting to sign Lucas Hernandez.

It was previously reported that the German club would trigger Hernandez's €80m release clause in the January transfer window, but the Bavarians plan to rekindle their interest in the 23-year-old Frenchman in the summer.

If Bayern Munich are able to capture the Atlético defender in the summer, then Los Rojiblancos will reportedly use the funds on de Ligt.

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars recently admitted that the 19-year-old Dutch centre-back would most likely leave the club.

"I think so. For me, de Ligt can play easily [in] any of the six best teams in the world right now," he told Diario AS.

"He has the power, the mentality, the heart. If I worked at another club, I would like to sign him immediately.

"We do not need to sell him, we do not need the money, but I know he will go to one of the big clubs [eventually]."

With Barcelona already securing the services of Frenkie de Jong in January, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed that the reigning La Liga champions are interested in signing his fellow Ajax teammate.

"His name is on the table," he told SER Catalunya in an interview (via Marca).

"Where there is such talent away from Barcelona, we're always looking at them.

"It's a topic that will be discussed in our sports planning, which begins in March, with De Jong we felt we had to move quickly because there were many clubs that wanted him."
