Diego Maradona was accused of making a racist gesture at the World Cup, he's since responded to that claim by posting a message on social media.

He was in attendance for Argentina's opening game of their World Cup campaign against Iceland.

The Argentina hero is loved for his brilliance in the World Cup. But his appalling behaviour during the Group D match is beyond unacceptable.

According to ITV presenter Jacqui Oatley, Maradona greeted some South Korea fans before apparently producing a racist gesture by pulling his eyes to the side.

"Maradona not so cool now. Some South Korea fans just shouted "Diego" and he obliged with a smile, kiss and wave. Then pulled his eyes to the side in a clearly racist gesture. All of us who saw it are stunned."

A day removed from the accusation, Maradona has taken to social media to give his account of the incident.

"I understand better than anyone that in the World Cup people are looking for news everywhere, but I want to be clear with this: today, in the stadium, among so many demonstrations of affection from the people, I was struck by a group of people around a fan who filmed us, an Asian boy wearing an Argentina T-shirt," he wrote on Facebook.

"I, from afar, tried to tell them how nice it seemed to me that even the Asians cheer for us. And that's all, guys, come on."

The 57-year-old still hasn't denied making the racist gesture.

He's also apologised for smoking a cigar in the VIP area while watching Argentina draw 1-1 with Iceland.

"I honestly did not know that no one can smoke in the stadiums. I apologise to everyone," he added on Facebook.

Maradona isn't just in Russia to cause a nuisance, he's actually been employed by Italian and Venezuelan television for punditry work.
