And supporters believe he's the perfect man to replace the injured Harry Maguire as skipper.
A clip of Fernandes giving Telles an earful in training has convinced fans he's captain material ahead of wearing the armband tonight.
The video shows the 26-year-old remonstrating with the Brazilian left-back during a rondo drill.
Needless to say, Fernandes' reaction in training got United fans talking.
One Twitter user wrote: "Good to see desire back at the club.. If that was Maguire and Shaw, Maguire would have apologised to Shaw and Shaw would have offered to make Maguire a cup of tea."
A second tweeted: "Doesn't matter if he gets the armband. Guys influence is visible. He has a winner mentality and anyone that fails to get on the level will just be dropped. Love it."
A third added: "Probably the only current player who could have handled playing in some of those Ferguson teams."
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unexpectedly handed the leadership role to Fernandes during a pre-match press conference.
"I was not expecting this, I have found out the same time as you!" the Portuguese midfielder said.
"For me it's an honour, I will be captain for my teammates and to be captain of Manchester United is an important achievement for me.
"But I think everyone is the captain. Everyone needs to help and be a leader in their own way, leadership is different in every player. Tomorrow will not be about me but the team.
"Leading is every day in the training ground, every game and everyone is doing their job to lead the team in the way they think is best."
