Bruno Fernandes went from complete shock to boasting a cheeky smile after finding out that he would captain Manchester United in the absence of Harry Maguire.

Maguire, 27, pulled back an important equaliser for the Red Devils in their 4-1 comeback victory against Newcastle on Saturday.

But the England international has been ruled out of United's first Champions League clash of the season against Paris Saint-Germain due to injury.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held his pre-match press conference on Monday alongside Fernandes, who has been in sensational form since his arrival in January.

The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder was left stunned when Solskjaer revealed that he would be United skipper for the PSG clash at the Parc des Princes.

However, Fernandes' reaction would change to immediate delight as he flicked his eyebrows while giving a cheeky smile during the press conference.

"The captain sits next to me. Bruno will captain the team tomorrow," Solskjaer said.

"Bruno has definitely come in and had a great positive impact. The stats show that and his performances have been receiving great praise as well.

"He has come in and if not changed the team he's sparked something in the team and I hope we've sparked something in his career.

"That was a turning point in our season last season and we hope from more to come."

Fernandes surprisingly saw his penalty saved against Newcastle at St James' Park, but the United star would score his side's second of the match late into the second half.

The former Sporting CP star admitted that he was caught by complete surprise that he was named United captain, but he called it an "honour and an important achievement for me."

Fernandes explained: "I was not expecting this. I found out this the same time as you!

"It is an honour and an important achievement for me. The captain is everyone -- everyone needs to help, be a leader in their way.

"I think I'm playing well in the last few months but I have to improve and do better. I think I can do much better than before.

"I know my numbers are good but I'm sure I will do better numbers and games than before."

Solskjaer will be without club captain Maguire, Edinson Cavani, Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard and Mason Greenwood for the PSG clash.

PSG welcome United to the Parc des Princes for an 8pm UK kick-off time on Tuesday.
