Spurs were beaten 1-0 by RB Leipzig on their own patch in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Julian Nagelsmann's exciting side were incredibly impressive at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and picked up the deserved victory courtesy of a Timo Werner penalty in the 58th minute.

The Germany striker had already spurned a golden opportunity in the first half when denied by Hugo Lloris but he made no mistake from 12 yards, slotting home the spot-kick after Ben Davies blatantly took out Konrad Laimer inside the area.

The vital away goal was no less than Leipzig deserved. They were quick out of the traps in North London and and created a series of clear-cut chances inside the first minute.

While they were unable to take the lead early on, it set the tempo for the rest of the game as the Red Bull outfit caused havoc for Jose Mourinho's side with their energy and fluidity.

With both Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son sidelined through injury, Spurs looked a tad toothless in attack and only started playing deep into the second half when they put their opponents under some sustained pressure for a prolonged period.

Last year's finalists must now turn things around in Leipzig in the second leg on 10 March.
