Jose Mourinho Revealed What He Told Scott McTominay After 'Worst Match'

The Manchester United manager wasn't as impressed with his young midfielder against Brighton as he had been in the past.

Jose Mourinho has come out all guns blazing since his Manchester United side lost to Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday. Youngster Scott McTominay was also in the firing line but his manager did have some words of encouragement too.

If only Mourinho's team were able to attack with the same aggression and pin point accuracy that the manager has managed in recent interviews, be it in his pre match amble for Brighton or the post match show.

Despite beating Liverpool last weekend and Brighton this weekend in between has been rather testing for the former Real Madrid manager. As well as the loss against Sevilla and the toothless display to go with the result was his bizarre post match ramblings that no United fan enjoyed hearing.

Check out our video on some of Mourinho's best quotes:

On Friday though he had a 12 minute rant where he made some decent points about the club's recent problems that have been occurring since before he joined. On Saturday he continued his tirade first by missing out Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba from his starting lineup.

At half time he pulled Luke Shaw off the pitch and post match he had some stern words for some of his players including Scott McTominay. Mourinho said it was the young Scot's 'worst match' for the first team so far but did reveal he told McTominay some good things about doing the basics, saying:

"There's an example of personality, you have the kid that didn't play well at all and I told him already, was the one I first spoke individually with in the dressing room, and instead of being critical with him I was positive with him. Because you play very bad but did the basic things that a player has to do and one of the basic things is to keep emotional balance.

"To play with that red shirt - which is a heavy one, is a heavy shirt to wear - and the kid in his worst performance by far, he was there. He was not afraid to play, he played bad and every player can play bad.

"...But big personality to cope with a mistake, big personality to say and to think I am not playing well but at least I will do the basic things of the game, which is to keep position, give balance to the team, recover balls, don't make defensive mistakes. But a few of the other guys were scared to play."

So even in playing badly the manager decided to praise the 21 year old who has recently impressed the boss enough to play him in some very big games like Sevilla away, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Weirdly he was missing from the starting line up against Sevilla in the 2-1 loss with Marouane Fellaini preferred in central midfield despite recently being out with injury for so long.

It seems that McTominay has quickly become a favourite of Mourinho.
