Manchester United failed to lure Jean-Kevin Augustin away from Leeds United at the last minute.

Augustin signed for the Championship side on loan from RB Leipzig yesterday with an option to make the deal permanent.

It's now emerged that other clubs were in for the 22-year-old, with one of them being Leeds' longtime rivals.

David Ornstein has reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were interested but Leeds offer was 'too advanced/impressive'.

United are in need of a striker following long-term injury to Marcus Rashford earlier this month.

Rashford is said to be out for up to three months and the 'Red Devils' only have Anthony Martial and teenager Mason Greenwood to play up top.

They have been linked with a variety of forwards in January, including Odion Ighalo and Islam Slimani.

One name United have constantly been linked with is Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

A deal for Fernandes was said to be dead in the water last week following interruption from United co-owner Joel Glazer.

But talks are reportedly still ongoing ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

United are eager to agree a deal worth around €60 million but that remains €20 million short of Sporting's valuation.

In other United transfer news, reports have emerged today that United could turn back to Alexis Sanchez to fix their forward line in the summer.

The Chilean is spending the season on loan at Inter Milan but the Italian side don't have an option to buy.

ESPN claim that the winger is expected to return to Carrington in July and expected to be involved in United's plans for next season.

The 31-year-old endured a disastrous first 18 months at Old Trafford and drew anger for his £500,000 a week contract.

Should he return to the Premier League, fans will be hoping he can get back to the form he showed in his three and a half years at Arsenal.
