Sheriff Tiraspol manager Yuriy Vernydub has verbally dismantled Dirk Kuyt following the club's win over Real Madrid - because the Dutchman said they 'don't belong' in the Champions League.

The Moldova outfit recorded the biggest result of their 24-year history on Tuesday night, emerging 2-1 victors at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It means they now top Group D which also features Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Back in August, Kuyt had played down their involvement in the competition and said: "I know that the Champions League is a competition for champions, but teams like Sheriff Tiraspol have nothing to do with the Champions League.

Just a month on, Vernydub has hit out at the former Liverpool man after an incredible start to life in Europe.

"It was a great player, Dirk Kuyt, who said there is no place in the Champions League for Sheriff," Vernydub said per The Guardian.

"So I'm very happy to destroy his perfect world. At the moment, I am very happy after this game against such a big club like Real Madrid. This is so emotional.

"I'm very appreciate of my boys for this great job. We are a real team.

"Some big name players said before there's no place in the Champions League for a team like Sheriff, but it's our place and we proved it."

Jasurbek Yakhshiboev put the away side ahead in the first half and stunned Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Karim Benzema then netted a penalty just past the hour mark to get 'Los Blancos' back in it.

However, in the 89th minute, Sebastien Thill stepped up to whack a delightful volley past Thibaut Courtois to snatch all three points.

Ancelotti admits he was left shocked by the last-gasp defeat and though his side deserved more.

"I'm a little sad as I think we deserved to win," he said per Evening Standard.

"You could say we had bad luck, we lost the game on the small details, they scored their goals on the counter-attack and from a throw-in.

"We had a lot of shots at goal but sometimes luck deserts you in games.

"Everything went well for them, everything went wrong for us."
