Diego Maradona is being treated as royalty by his club in Argentina after Gimnasia gave him his own pitchside throne.

The former Barcelona star has the luxury of watching his side in comfort on the sideline as opposed to sitting on the bench, with the blue and white chair complete with the Gimnasia badge, as well as El Diego's initials and signature.

According to First Post, the club are to auction the chair after every home game - while signed replicas of the chair will be available in the club shop.

The special seat should go a long way in stopping Maradona taking a tumble when he gets too excited on the touchline.

It won't be the first time the World Cup winner has his own pitchside throne, as back in October Newell's Old Boys gave him the warmest of welcomes for his return.

Maradona played five times for Newell's late on in his illustrious career and was given a hero's welcome by the club's fans at his hotel in Rosario prior to the match.

He was presented with a framed painting, a canvas artwork, a Newell's shirt and his very own throne just before kick off, gracing the chair with his signature.

He wasted no time in getting comfortable and duly watched his team smash Newell's 4-0 at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium while in a seat fit for a king.

The rest of his backroom staff took their seats in the dugout but there was Maradona looking like Jim Royle in his new chair.

Maradona was appointed Gimnasia manager in September. He announced he had left the club just two months into his stint, only to reverse his decision two days later.
