Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has insisted that Jadon Sancho's lack of playing time for England at Euro 2020 has "surprised many in Germany."

Sancho was in sensational form for Borussia Dortmund last season as he scored an impressive 16 times and registered 20 assists in 38 appearances.

However, the 21-year-old winger has failed to secure a regular starting position for Gareth Southgate's Three Lions at this summer's Euros.

Sancho was left out of England's squad for the Three Lions' opening Euro 2020 win over Croatia at Wembley.

The England international made the bench for the Scotland clash, but Sancho was an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw at Wembley.

Sancho, who has been heavily linked with Manchester United this summer, was finally called into action in England's 1-0 win over the Czech Republic.

The Dortmund star came off the bench in the 84th minute to replace Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka, who impressed fans with his stunning performance at Wembley.

The 60-year-old also hilariously suggested the idea of his native country giving Sancho a German passport.

"He was one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years," Matthaus said.

"If he is not good enough for England, we would like to give him a German passport! It has surprised many in Germany."

England topped Group D and progressed to the knockout stages of Euro 2020 after their victory over the Czech Republic.

The Three Lions will now face Germany in a huge round-of-16 clash at Wembley on 29th June.
