The Sir Alex Ferguson 'hairdryer' has become as much as part of Manchester United folklore as the trophies the man himself delivered to Old Trafford over the course of his 27 years as manager of the club. But Ferguson has now claimed that his most ferocious form of bollocking was only ever dished out six times.

Speaking in a recent interview, the legendary manager explained how the use of the hairdryer had been overstated and that in fact it was only used on half a dozen occasions.

"There was a lot of myth about it. It happened about half a dozen times in 27 years and the players will tell you that. The problem for me was if a player answered me back, I headed towards them. That was my problem.

"Jock Stein always said to me, 'Leave it until Monday to talk to them,' but I said I couldn't wait until Monday. So, on a Saturday after the game, I told them exactly how I felt, because we had trained at a level all week that I expected to win every game."

We can't imagine too many players answered Ferguson back over the years. Also, given how many times the Scotsman lost his rag on the touchline, whether it was towards officials, rival managers or his own players, it's probably safe to say he has a different idea of what constitutes the hair dryer treatment to those who have been on the receiving end of his tongue lashings over the years.
