Newcastle Fans Take Over The River Thames Ahead Of Their Win Over Brentford

The travelling Geordies opted for an unusual method of transport to the match.

Newcastle’s away fans opted for an unusual method of transport to their Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday.

The travelling Geordie support took advantage of the relatively balmy conditions in London (at least compared to Newcastle) with a cruise down the River Thames ahead of the match.

A video posted on Twitter by Away Day Bible showed hundreds of Newcastle fans packed onto a single boat and in fine voice.

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given was impressed with the away support, commenting: “Class that”.

It would turn out to be a successful trip for the travelling Geordies, who watched their team beat relegation rivals Brentford 2-0 in west London.

Brentford were reduced to 10 men after just 11 minutes when Josh Dasilva was shown a straight red card for an ugly challenge on Matt Targett.

Joelinton would put Newcastle in front with a header shortly after the half hour mark before Joe Willock added a second for the visitors before the break.

Brentford would bring on Christian Eriksen in the second half, the Denmark international returning to competitive football for the first time since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a match at Euro 2020.

But the former Tottenham man couldn’t inspire a dramatic comeback from the home side, as Newcastle saw out an important win.

Newcastle move above Brentford into 14th and are now three points clear of the drop zone.

Speaking after the match, Magpies boss Eddie Howe said: “We are on a really good run.

"The spirit is high and confidence is returning to the players, but we have tough fixtures ahead and aren't taking anything for granted."

He added: “Really pleased with our response to the red card, because, as we saw in our game against Norwich, it doesn’t guarantee you anything.

"We knew we’d have a lot of the ball, and it was about our quality and ability to break them down."
