Thomas Muller aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Lionel Messi following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.

PSG will go another season without the prestigious Champions League, having suffered elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry were on target as Bayern beat PSG 2-0 on night (3-0 on aggregate) to book their spot in the next round of the competition.

PSG's superstar talents Kylian Mbappe and Messi failed to influence the game as they continue to seek their first Champions League triumph.

And Muller has rubbed salt into Messi's wounds by aiming a subtle dig after Bayern's victory as he referenced Cristiano Ronaldo.

He said 'things always go well' for the German giants against the Argentina legend, claiming Ronaldo at Real Madrid was their problem.

"Against Messi, things always go well at all levels in terms of results," he said after the result. "At club level, Cristiano Ronaldo was our problem when he was at Real Madrid. But I have the greatest respect for Messi's World Cup performance.

"Messi’s individual performance at the World Cup was amazing. He carried the whole squad. It’s not so easy to play at a team like PSG. It’s difficult to get a really good team balance."

It's another defeat for Messi against Bayern, who have previously beaten Barcelona 7-0 and 8-2.

As for Bayern, they book their spot in the quarter-finals as Julian Nagelsmann believes his side deserved the win following a stellar second-half showing.

"In the first half, we didn’t do what we had spoken about before very well," he told reporters. "There was too much space. We defended better in the second half and were dangerous on the ball. In the end, we deserved to win."
